School is difficult for most. Between the skills required to succeed academically and the strenuous effort it takes to thrive socially many might think, how could school participation get anymore complicated? Well. We could have no textbooks. That could make it worse.

The 2016-2017 school year at good old Washburn High School failed to start off with a bang. Instead, it was more of a disappointing sigh filled with longing and regret, mostly due to our serious lack of proper school materials. When confronted about the missing textbooks, many teachers said that you can simply buy your own. With the average high school textbook costing an average of $70 and 51% of public school students considered to be in poverty, a textbook of that value might be difficult to comeby. You’d imagine that core curriculum textbooks would be pretty high up on our administrators list of what students will need in order to succeed. Evidently not. It seems as though building new classrooms and misprinting $55 yearbooks is more important. Instead of building new classrooms, a better use may be to use our funding to make sure the classrooms we already have are well stocked with the resources required to actually learn.

This problem doesn’t just apply to Washburn. Public schools everywhere have been found to be lacking in important resources that aid the learning process (textbooks, calculators, workbooks, internet access etc.).Teachers are expected to help us learn, graduate, and thrive in our adult lives. They are supposed to help hand-in our assignments, complete our projects, and pass the tests. With only notes from class and the occasional slideshow, how are we supposed to do that? Textbooks are an absolute necessity if students are expected to learn, study, and succeed. All of which begs the question, where are our textbooks?
