For those distraught over the idea of getting a flu shot, you need to know that it’s not about you.

It’s about the kids, the elderly, and those with damaged immune systems. The flu isn’t fun; fever,  aches and pains,  awful runny noses–none are accidentally hospitalizing your 73-year old neighbor because he caught the flu from you.

People do not seem to understand how germs work.

All it takes is a touch for someone to become infected. A nasty touch of bodily excrement left on the doorknob could be responsible for one of the 32,743 flu related deaths per year. Physical one-on-one touch isn’t even necessary to transfer the flu virus. The stall handle you touched in the bathroom probably still has germs on it from the last person who grabbed it! It’s been reported that 1 in 5 people don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom.

Let’s consider this the next time we go into a Washburn restroom. By not washing our hands, we not only increase the chances of those around us getting sick, but we also increase the chances of getting ourselves sick, you can give yourself the flu!

So how can you equip yourself against the merciless yearly bug? There are many opportunities available to help decrease the chances of getting yourself, and your peers sick: 1) Just by getting a flu shot you can lower your chances of getting the flu by 70-90 percent. 2) Don’t come to school if you are sick. Washburn has a 24-hour exclusion rule for vomiting, diarrhea or fever. So if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t come to class, we don’t want you here. Gross. 3) Visit the Washburn health office or the school clinic (yes, they are different) for more information about the yearly flu or any other health concerns you may have.

The health office can be contacted by phone at 612-668-3525.

In short, dear students of Washburn, wash your hands and get a flu shot.
