The Minnesota Twins are the worst club in baseball. It’s now the end of the MLB regular season, and the Twins have 59 wins. Out of a 162 game season. Yikes. That’s 23 less than the Golden State Warriors, with 80 additional games in the season. The Twins had a win percentage of .364, which is not only the worst in the league this year, but the worst Win-Loss record in history, since the franchise changed for the Washington Senators to the Minnesota Twins. The part that is frustrating for many Twins fans is that the team showed real promise in posting the first winning percentage over .500 since 2010, and having several young players put up strong individual showings. Then, this season happened. The Twins were worse in nearly every category, and it showed, since they regressed by 24 wins between the two seasons; from 83 all the way down to 59. So, what the heck happened? The roster and coaches remained close to the same, but nearly every individual player, except for Brian Dozier, got worse.

One of the most interesting factors in the Twins extreme regression from the heights of last season is that they may not have been that good in the first place last season. Sure, they may not have been quite this bad, but they probably weren’t nearly as good as their record suggests. How? Well, the answer to that is a statistic called cluster luck. What is cluster luck? It’s basically how a team bunches it’s hits together. Essentially, hits with runners on base are far more valuable to an offense than hits with nobody on base, because they give you a better chance to score runs. So cluster luck is how a team clusters hits together all at one time, or how “clutch” a team is with men on base. However, these clutch hits are pretty much out of a team’s control. Even if you believe in some kind of clutch gene, the fact is that when a player gets up to at, he can really do little about whether the players in front of him got on base.

In the 2015 season, the Twins had some off-the-charts cluster luck. A good barometer of cluster luck is batting average with runners in scoring position, when compared to total batting average. Since that is kind of a mouthful, we’ll shorten it to BAw/RiSP. Last year, the Twins had a sky high .280 BAw/RiSP, and only a .247 batting average overall on the season, which is extremely lucky and wildly unsustainable, but this year it took a staggering drop to .238, with an overall average of .251, which on the other hand is rather unlucky. That’s a lot of missed opportunities to score between this year and last year, even though the Twins actually have been hitting as well or better overall this season.

While the Twins, in fairness, have struggled somewhat unfairly this year in the cluster luck department it’s hard to point the finger at any one thing for the complete and total failure as a team. There were various factors that contributed to what ended up being a total failure for the Twins as an organization, and as unfortunate as the cluster luck has been this year, the Twins really can’t hold that up for an excuse for such a catastrophic season.
