The Tony-winning musical, In The Heights, just ended production  here at Washburn. I had the opportunity to see it on opening night, February 19th. Overall, the show was well-done, but there were specific moments and characters that stood out among the rest.

Plot-wise, the story wasn’t very complicated, but the message, themes, and culture made were what made the show a huge hit. The focused on strong family relations and emphasized the celebration of ethnic neighborhoods, which made it very heartwarming and uplifting. The show teaches us that one’s community can become one’s family. Compared to last year’s production of Les Misérables, In The Heights was much more contemporary and happy.

As far as characters, I felt that Daniela, Camila, and Benny were the best portrayed. Carolie Bonneville-Nelson, who played Daniela, had an infectious charisma that exposed the character’s development. She also had a wonderful singing voice and dance moves, particularly in the “Carnaval” scene. Kate Cosgrove played Camila, and she was great.  She was really good at getting angry and her singing voice was beautiful. This was especially evident at the end in the huge scene outside Rosario’s (the limo service company) when Camilia, Nina and Kevin  are fighting. Benny, played by Max Streitz, had a beautiful singing voice and great dance moves. His character was so sweet and kind, you couldn’t help but fall in love.

In The Heights was very good; The whole cast did a phenomenal job and I can’t wait to see what our talented students have to offer next year. Screen Shot 2015-02-18 at 9.39.13 AM
